The Mallorcan olive oil
Although The olive is a tree that has been linked to the culture of Mallorca for centuries, only since 2002 has the DO Oli de Mallorca, Denomination of Origin, existed as such.
The distinction of Denomination of Origin according to the regulation of the European Union is granted on the basis of quality criteria related to the region in which it is produced, and in the case of the DO Oli de Mallorca in addition to being produced, processed and packaged in Mallorca, with arbequina olives, picual or mallorquina olives, 3 different kinds that can be used in one type or a mixture of the 3 in different proportions that each producer mixes according to their criteria to obtain a characteristic “coupage” that defines them as a brand.
Autumn is the time when the olive is harvested on Mallorca.
During the months of October to January, the olives are collected and processed to produce the olive oil each season. Depending on the different areas of the island, the olive is ready for collection at an earlier time in the south, or later in the north.
But in 2018 a total of 300,000 litres of DO Oli de Mallorca oil were produced. And this year 2019 is expected to surpass this figure.
Part of the value of “DO Oli de Mallorca” oil is that its production is carried out by small producers who take care of their productions.
In the real estate market more and more private owners have their small production of oil for private consumption. They also can meet the conditions of the DO and some are also certified as organic producers. This means that some properties for sale in Mallorca are also being promoted as olive oil producers. For example, a small production of 1,000 kg of olive oil with a yield of 10% gives you around 100 litres of olive oil per year. A family’s consumption could be around 60 litres a year, so you can still have the pleasure of giving your closest friends and family a small bottle of your own oil as a present. A luxury at your fingertips.
